Mercy Written InLamentations 3:22

The Itemized List I Keep Rewriting

This message is for to name what she failed at once, without itemizing it, because the itemizing has become the only way she feels she is taking it seriously

Tess had a yellow legal pad and one afternoon on it, written out fifteen times.

The afternoon itself took about four minutes. What she said, in somebody else's kitchen, to a woman who did not deserve it, at a moment that turned out to matter more than either of them knew standing there.

Version one, written that same night, was six lines.

Version nine, two months later, ran a page and a half. It included what she had been thinking on the drive over, and the three things she should have said instead, and the exact way the other woman's face changed and then unchanged itself, which Tess had been carrying around like a slide she could bring up any time she was alone.

Version fifteen had subheadings.

Now, understand this, because it is the part people always get wrong about a woman like Tess. She was not torturing herself for sport. She was doing it because the detail was the proof. A short account felt like getting off lightly. If she could still name the color of the mug she was holding, then she was taking it seriously, and taking it seriously was the only decent thing she had left to offer.

Marta came by at dawn on a Saturday to drive her to the market and let herself in the back way, and found her at the kitchen table with the lamp still on from the night before, writing version sixteen.

Marta read three lines. Then she put her hand flat down on the page.

"Tess. Tell me what happened. One sentence."

Tess started version sixteen out loud, from the drive over.

"One sentence."

And Tess sat there with her mouth open like a woman who has been asked to do arithmetic in another language, and then she said it. Seven words. That was all it took. There was nothing in them to hide behind and they were over in about two seconds.

The room did not fall in.

Marta said, "Good. Now tell me what the terms provide for it."

Tess said she did not know.

"No," said Marta. "You don't. You have written the same four minutes sixteen times and you have never once read the other clause."

And Tess closed the legal pad and pushed it away from her across the table, and it slid and came to rest against the sugar bowl, and the first light came in through the window over the sink and lay along the edge of it, and Marta laughed at something out the window, and Tess laughed too, a small cracked surprised laugh, and neither of them said anything for a while.

And you have a legal pad.

Maybe not yellow, and maybe it never goes on paper at all. But you have one afternoon, or one sentence, or one year, and you have written it out more times than you would admit to anybody, and every version is longer than the one before it.

The Itemized List I Keep Rewriting

The detail is not the seriousness

I want to say the kind thing first, and I want to say it carefully, because the wrong kindness here does damage.

Nobody who did not care would write it sixteen times. That is the truth and it should be said out loud. The rewriting came out of a conscience, not out of vanity, and there is a version of this teaching that treats a woman like Tess as though she were being dramatic. She was not. She was being thorough, in the only direction she knew how to be thorough in.

But look at what the thoroughness had quietly become. Sixteen drafts of an accusation, all of them written by the defendant, none of them ever answered by anybody, filed nowhere, read by no one, and getting longer.

So here is the ground, and it goes in here, in the middle of the teaching, where it belongs. One half of this covenant is God's own provision, and that half is settled and written and it does not wait on the quality of your account. The other half is your response, and it is real, and it is genuinely asked, and it is not the thing that repairs the breach. Both halves are true at once and neither one cancels the other.

Right now, as you read, you have mercy already provided for by the document itself, not extended to you as an exception this morning. Lamentations 3:22 is where it is written down, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a line from the middle of a book of grief into a kitchen where a lamp has been on all night.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 and 23

Read where that sentence is standing

That verse does not come from a good day. It sits in the middle of the saddest book in the Bible, in a chapter where the man writing it has already said that his soul is bowed down within him.

He is not looking away from what happened. He names it, at length, before and after. And in the middle of naming it he turns and says: they are new every morning.

Which means the mercy is not a reward for having finished the account well. It arrives on the same schedule as the sunrise, on the exact morning the lamp has been on all night, and it does not read the draft first.

You were met by a mercy that renews itself daily rather than one you have to apply for, and I am not softening the seriousness of anything by saying so. It is what Lamentations 3:23 puts in writing at the worst possible moment for it, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old line about morning land on a woman at an actual dawn.

There is an advocate named in the terms

Here is the clause Tess had never read, and it is the specific thing this category exists to hand over.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

Read the shape of that. He does not pretend it will not happen. He says plainly that the aim is that it not happen, and then, without softening either half, he says what is provided if it does. The provision is inside the same sentence as the standard. It is not a concession bolted on afterward by somebody feeling generous.

And notice what is provided. Not a procedure. A person. An advocate, which is counsel, which is somebody whose whole job is to speak for you in the matter.

You have counsel appointed to you in 1 John 2:1, named, by his own name, and a woman with counsel does not sit up all night drafting her own statement in longer and longer detail. The Spirit is called the same thing a few chapters over in John's gospel, and there is a reason the vocabulary matches: you are represented from both sides at once.

As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:12

And your response is real

Now the other half, because mercy written into the terms is not the same thing as nothing being asked.

Something is asked of you, and it is not sixteen drafts. It is one naming. Say the thing once, plainly, to God, in the fewest words that are true, which is precisely what Tess did at that table in seven words. Then go and make what can be made right, where it can be made right, in the way an honest person does.

That is a real term and it is not decorative. What it is not is a payment, and it is not a probation, and there is no period after it during which you are being watched more closely than usual. Nothing in the document works that way.

You have a response to make and His word supplies both the willingness and the words for it, and His Spirit is not standing over the table waiting for a better draft. He is the one who put your hand flat on the page.

The breakthrough

There is no case being built against you. There is no docket, no file, nobody reading the drafts. The one person qualified to speak in the matter has already been appointed and He is not the prosecution.

And the way this moves from true to yours is short, and shortness is the whole point. You name it once. Out loud, in your own voice, in the fewest true words, and then you stop talking and you let the other clause be read.

You were given the naming and He was given the answering, and Lamentations 3:22 says His mercies do not come to an end while you are still finding the right words, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a seven word sentence enough when a page and a half was not.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you sit. This right to speak was given to you in Christ and it is His authority, not mine and not yours by nature. Scripture is the ground under every line of it and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines live. What He does with the years of drafts is His to decide, in His own way and in His timing.

  1. Yellow legal pad by the lamp, you are not the evidence that I care. Lamentations 3:22 says His mercies never come to an end and are new every morning, and mercy that arrives with the sunrise has never once waited to read my sixteenth version first. In the name of Jesus I am closing you and pushing you across the table.
  2. Fear that a short account lets me off, you have the arithmetic backwards. 1 John 2:1 puts an advocate inside the terms by name, and a woman with counsel does not sit up all night writing her own statement longer, so His Spirit is not asking me for a better draft. I am saying it once and I am saying it true.
  3. Father of mercies, You wrote the provision into the same sentence as the standard, and You did not soften either one to do it. You are the God who removes my transgressions as far as the east is from the west, and Your Spirit is the hand laid flat on my page at dawn. I am naming it once, and then I am going to the market with Marta.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
