Terms Laid OpenIsaiah 55:3

I Do Not Sign Things Now

This message is for to be able to read an agreement again at all, after the last document he signed cost him the roof over his head and left him certain that every set of terms is a trap with a friendly face

The bay doors were up and the last of the sun came in flat across the concrete, the way it does in that half hour when everything on the mountain turns the color of a struck match.

Training day was over. Eleven of them stood around with mugs, boots half unlaced, ropes coiled on the pegs, somebody's dog asleep under the bench. Good tired. The kind you only get when nothing went wrong.

Ray Halloran had come up to help with the stretcher carry because they were short, and for no other reason. He had made that clear in the lot at seven, and he made it clear again when Denny came over with a clipboard held flat against his leg.

"Not signing anything, Denny."

"I know it."

"I mean it. I do not sign things now."

"I know that too."

Six years back Ray had put his name on a page for a man he trusted, and the page did exactly what it said it would do, and when it had finished doing it the house on Fell Road was not his anymore. He had read that page. That is the part that stayed. He had read it all the way down, and it went the way it went, and ever since, a document with a friendly face has been the most frightening object in any room he walks into.

Denny did not argue. He drank his coffee and watched the light climb the far wall. Then he turned the clipboard face down and said, "Sit a minute. I will read it to you. Out loud. Both sides."

"I did not ask you to."

"I know."

So Denny read it to him with the doors open and the yard going amber. Our side, he said. We train you. We equip you. We come for you if you go down, and we come with everything we have. We do not put a man off this roster over one bad night.

Your side. Answer the pager when you can. Tell us straight when you cannot. Keep your kit where you can reach it.

Then he stopped. That was the end of it.

Ray sat there with the mug going cold in both hands. "That is it."

"That is it."

"There is no other page."

"There is no other page, Ray. There never was. Nobody ever read it to you, is all."

And that is the whole of it for you too, though yours has nothing to do with ropes. Somebody handed you a faith once and never once laid its terms open where you could see them. So you live inside an agreement you have never read, braced for a clause nobody has ever shown you, and you would not sit down and read one now for anybody.

Sit a minute anyway. Somebody is going to read it to you.

I Do Not Sign Things Now

Somebody has to read it to you

Let me name the wound before I lift anything, because being lifted at by a stranger who has not named it is its own small injury, and there have been enough of those.

A man caught by fine print does not become a careful man. He becomes a man who cannot read at all. The lines swim. The friendly voice across the table is the exact voice he heard the last time, and every kind sentence in the document reads as evidence of the trap rather than evidence of the kindness. That is not stubbornness and it is not unbelief. It is an injury, and injuries behave like injuries.

So nobody here will slide a page toward you and ask you to initial the bottom. We are going to do what Denny did. Read it out loud, both sides, slowly, and stop when it stops. Here is God speaking, in His own wording rather than mine:

Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.Isaiah 55:3

Read it again for its shape and not for its warmth. Two halves sit in that one sentence and they are not the same size. Incline, come, hear. That is your column, three verbs, every one of them something a man can do sitting down with cold coffee in his hands. Then the line turns and God takes the rest Himself. I will make with you an everlasting covenant. He is not asking you to make it. He announces what He will make, and fastens the word everlasting onto it out loud, where witnesses can hear.

Right now, as you read, you stand inside an agreement whose weight-bearing half was never handed to you to carry. I am not laying my own opinion over you. It is written in Isaiah 55:3 with God as the subject of the verb, and the Holy Spirit is taking a sentence you have skimmed for years and setting it down exactly where the bracing lives.

Both columns, and neither one shrunk

I said both sides and I meant it, because a page that reads you only the comfortable column has done to you what everybody else did, just in the friendlier direction.

Something is asked of you. Incline. Come. Hear. Those are real, they are addressed to you, and a man who never inclines and never comes and never hears is not being quietly carried along by an agreement he is ignoring. Anyone who tells you nothing at all is asked has handed you half a document and called it grace, and you of all people know that a page with one column on it is the page to be afraid of.

But look at the kind of thing being asked. Not payment. Not performance. Not a clean record produced at the door. He asks you to lean toward Him and listen, which is the posture of a man being read to, and He has been doing the reading the whole time.

So you are being asked for something real and you are not being billed for anything, and both of those sentences live inside Isaiah 55:3 in one breath. Come and hear on your side. I will make, on His. The Spirit is not in the room to collect from you; He is here to make a written line land in a chest that has been shut since Fell Road.

Here is the sentence this whole thing stands on, and it belongs in the middle of the teaching rather than at the end where a disclaimer would go. The half that holds this covenant up is God's oath, and that half is settled. The half that is yours is your response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it is not the half holding the thing up.

The clause you keep waiting for is not in here

The next line is spoken to a people who had already broken with Him, which is worth knowing before you read it, because it changes who is being addressed.

For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you.Isaiah 54:10

Notice what God offers to lose first. Mountains are the human measure of a thing that does not move; a man navigates by one precisely because it has never gone anywhere. In this verse the mountain is not the permanent thing. The covenant of peace is. The mountain is what God is willing to spend to make the point.

So you have a covenant of peace that outlasts the geology of the county you live in, and I am not warming that up for you. It is God's own comparison, written down in Isaiah 54:10, and His Spirit is the One who takes a comparison like that and makes it bear weight in a man who has been braced for six years.

The kindness in it is not the bait

That is the real fear and it deserves to be said in daylight. Not that the terms are hard. That the terms are gentle, and gentle is how the last one started.

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.John 6:37

Read how that is built. God could have written it as a warm assurance and left Himself room. Instead He puts it in the negative and closes the door from the inside: never cast out. That is a sentence written by someone who knew He would be dealing with people who have been put out before.

You were not talked into this and there is no softening up here for a clause that arrives later. The wording in John 6:37 shuts that door on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a shut door feel like shelter instead of a trick.

The breakthrough

This is where it stops being a page and becomes where you stand.

You have an everlasting covenant with your own ear named in it, and the word everlasting was not chosen by anybody trying to sell you something. God chose it in Isaiah 55:3, and the Spirit is pressing it now into the exact place the last document left its mark. There is no other page. Nothing is going to be produced against you later. That is not a mood I am putting on you; it is what an oath is for, and it is why He swore one.

Nobody is asking you to trust a friendly face today. Read the sheet. That is all. Read it the way Denny read it, out loud, both columns, and stop where it stops.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down, with something in your hands if that helps. The right to read the terms of your own covenant is yours in Christ, and nobody at any table can withdraw it. Scripture is the ground under every line of this, and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines living rather than merely legal. What He does with your column from here is His to decide, and the outcome is His.

  1. Paper that took the roof off my house, you are not the last word on what I can read. Isaiah 55:3 says God makes an everlasting covenant with the one who inclines and hears, and inclining is something a man can do sitting down with cold coffee in his hands. In the name of Jesus I am reading both columns of this one out loud.
  2. Shame of being the one who signed, you have no seat at this reading. Isaiah 54:10 says the mountains go before God's covenant of peace goes, so a man who was taken once is standing inside a peace older than the ridge behind his house. I am the one this is being read to, and leaning in to hear it is my whole part today.
  3. Lord, You took both ends of this covenant and You have never once asked me to guarantee it. Your word in Isaiah 55:3 says You make it and You call it everlasting, and Your Spirit is holding it steady while I read. I am inclining my ear tonight, and that is the whole of what You asked of me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
