Nobody In This House Has Read It

Sunday evening, and the long table is out in the courtyard again, because the kitchen was never going to hold everybody and everybody came. Three generations down one table. An uncle tuning a guitar he has no intention of playing properly. Somebody's baby asleep across two laps at once.

And then the sentence gets said. The family sentence. The one that has been said at this table since before half the people sitting at it were born.

God keeps His side. We keep ours.

Nobody knows who said it first. It gets said the way the blessing gets said, same voice, same speed, and then the plates keep moving.

Except tonight the nine year old is kneeling up on her chair with a spoon in her fist, and she says, "Where does it say that?"

The table stops. Not the bad kind of stopping. The happy kind, where everybody laughs first and then notices the laugh was covering something.

The grandmother says, "It says it in the Bible, mi vida."

And the girl, who is nine and therefore not finished, says, "Where in the Bible?"

Sixty years of that sentence at that table. Grandparents who prayed out loud in a language their grandchildren only half speak. And not one person there can turn to it.

Somebody says it might be in Psalms. Somebody else is certain it is Deuteronomy. An aunt says it is probably in Hebrews somewhere and starts clearing plates, which in that family is what you do when a question gets bigger than the table.

And the youngest one is still waiting, because she asked a real question and nobody answered it.

So the man at the end of the table gets up. Not to correct anybody. He goes into the house, and the Bible is on the shelf where it always is, the big one with the cracked spine that gets carried to funerals and weddings and never opened in between. He brings it back out with the light going orange along the wall.

And then he sits with it closed in front of him and feels something he did not expect at all, which is fear.

Because if he opens it, he is the first. Not the first to love God in this family, God forbid, not by a hundred miles. The first to read the thing they have all been quoting. And there is a voice, and you know this voice, that tells him opening it is the same as accusing them.

That is the voice you have been obeying for years without ever learning its name.

You have your own version of that table. Maybe not a courtyard. Maybe a kitchen in a cold city, four of you and one on speakerphone. But you have the sentence, the one your people say about God, and you have never once looked it up, and you have told yourself that was loyalty.

It was not loyalty. It was only that nobody ever laid it open for you either.

The sentence everybody can quote and nobody can find

Here is the first thing, and it needs saying before anything gets opened: the quoting was never the problem. The quoting was love. Somebody put that sentence in the air over your childhood so that God would be an ordinary presence at your table instead of a stranger you met at seventeen in a crisis. That was a gift, and it cost them to keep saying it.

But a sentence repeated and never read begins to drift. It gets rounded off. It picks up a tone. And by the third generation, God keeps His side and we keep ours is not landing as a covenant at all. It is landing as a warning. Keep up, or He might not.

You are not an accuser for opening it. You are a reader, and reading is the most loyal thing anybody at that table has done in sixty years. Nehemiah 9:8 is a man standing up in front of a whole nation and saying it out loud about God: and hast performed thy words. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit does not hand a person the document so they can build a case against their grandmother. He hands it over so somebody in the house finally knows what it says.

And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites ... to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous.Nehemiah 9:8

Read what that man is doing. He is not saying God is good in general. He is saying God made a covenant and then performed it, and he says it with the details attached: the land, the seed, the name. That is a document being read out loud in public. It is not a warm feeling being reported.

What is actually written on His side

So let us do the thing nobody at your table has done yet. Not a summary of the terms. One term, in His own voice, with the reference on it, so you can find it again tomorrow morning when you doubt every word of this.

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.Genesis 17:7

You have His own sentence in your hands now, and it is not a summary and it is not a mood. Count the verbs on His side of it. He establishes. He binds it. He puts everlasting on it and He puts thy seed after thee on it, and there is not one clause anywhere in there about your family's attendance record. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is lifting it off the page this minute and setting it under a man who has spent forty years assuming he was on probation with God.

Now the sentence this whole site exists to say plainly, and it goes here, in the middle, where you can argue with it, rather than at the end where it would sound like a disclaimer.

Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. His half is an oath: sworn, finished, on record, and not under review this month depending on how your month has gone. Your half is a response. To believe Him. To say yes. To live like somebody who belongs to Him. Your half is real, it is genuinely asked of you, and it is not the thing holding the covenant up. Get those two the wrong way round and you will spend your life anxious inside something that was settled before you were born.

You are standing on the settled half right now, and not on your own consistency. Scripture says God swore by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by, Hebrews 6:13, and the Spirit takes a legal fact like that and makes it feel like ground instead of theory. Your yes matters. Your yes is not the foundation. Both of those are true, and neither one weakens the other.

And notice what the terms are not. They are not a score sheet. The moment somebody itemizes a covenant into a list and tapes it to the refrigerator, that family has built the exact fine print it was afraid of. That is not reading, that is auditing. A covenant gets read the way you read a letter from someone who loves you and means what he says. One thing at a time. Out loud. Slowly.
