The kitchen is at that stage where there are more people in it than there are useful jobs, which is the correct stage for a kitchen to be at on a day like this. Two pans going. Somebody's radio on the windowsill. An aunt with flour to the elbow telling a story that has already been told twice and is better this time. A boy under the table with a dog who is having the greatest afternoon of his life.
And the man at the counter has a notebook.
He has had it since Tuesday. It has timings in it. It has who is bringing what, and a second column for who said they were bringing something and will not. It has the order the pans go on, and a small diagram of the table with names, because there are two people who should not sit together this year and one who has to be near a door.
He is a good man and this is love. Nobody in that kitchen doubts that for a second.
He is explaining the plan to his sister, who is not listening, because she is putting the rice on. He gets to the part about the timings. He says, "So if we start the meat at four, then at four twenty we can start the..."
And she takes the notebook out of his hands mid sentence.
She does not argue with it. She does not read it. She reaches up and puts it flat on top of the refrigerator, where it will stay until Thursday, where he cannot reach it without a chair and there is no chair, because every chair in the house is already at the table.
Then she puts a wooden spoon in his hand and says one word. "Stir."
And he stands there for a second holding a spoon and looking at the top of the refrigerator, and then he laughs, because the whole kitchen has stopped to watch and the aunt with the flour has started clapping, and the boy under the table has repeated the word stir eleven times in a row.
The food gets made. It gets made beautifully. Nobody at that table ever knows there was a diagram.
Now come back out of the kitchen, because this is about you.
God asked you something. It was not vague and you know exactly what it was, and it was a while ago now. Months. Maybe longer. And you have been preparing to answer.
You have been reading around it. You have been getting into a better rhythm first, getting one situation stable first, waiting for the season to settle. You have a shape in your head for how it would work, and the shape has stages in it, and the stages have prerequisites, and somewhere in the middle of all that honest and decent work, the answering quietly stopped being a thing you were doing and became a thing you were building up to.
He asked you a question. You have been drafting a program.

What the covenant actually asks
Let us say the awkward part first, because this site does not do the trick where the ask gets softened until it disappears.
There is an ask. The covenant has terms and one of them is yours. Anybody who tells you the agreement asks nothing at all has handed you a warm feeling and taken away the only part that was actually given to you. That is not kindness. That is being left out of your own covenant.
But look at the shape of the ask, because the shape is the mercy.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15
You are being asked for an answer and not for a program. Choose you this day, says Joshua 24:15, and notice the size of the unit: a day, not a decade, not a phase, not a completed rebuild of your life, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over your shoulder waiting for the fifth draft. The word that gets asked for there is small enough to say between the meat going on and the rice coming off.
That is the whole difference between an answer and a plan. A plan is a thing you owe yourself. An answer is a thing you say to a Person.
The half that was never yours to build
Here is what your notebook has been quietly competing with.
And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.Exodus 6:7
You have His half in writing already, and He wrote it in the first person before He asked you anything. I will take you. I will be to you a God. Those are undertakings, not intentions, and there is no line item in them for your preparation. That is written down with a reference on it, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that across the room and sets it under a man who is standing at a counter trying to earn a thing that has already been given.
So here is the plain sentence, and it goes here in the middle of the teaching, not at the end where it would sound like small print.
Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. His half is sworn and finished and on record. Your half is your answer. You are standing inside a settled thing while you draft, and the drafting was never load bearing. Scripture is where that stands, Hebrews 6:13 says He swore by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that land in a chest instead of a filing cabinet. Your answer is real. It is genuinely asked of you. It matters, and it is not the thing keeping this standing.
And take this next part carefully, because it is where a page like this usually turns cruel.
You were never asked to have it worked out first, and a slow answer is still an answer. Nobody is timing you. There is no clock on the wall of this thing and there is no mark against a person who took two years to say a word, and if anybody taught you otherwise they were not reading Joshua 24:15, they were reading their own anxiety out loud. The Spirit does not hurry people. He asks them, and He waits with them, and He is not embarrassed by how long it takes.
What He is asking for is not more. It is smaller. It is a sentence.
So put the notebook down. Not forever. Just for the length of one sentence.
You have an answer in you tonight, and it does not need the rest of the plan behind it to count. God said I will take you to me for a people, Exodus 6:7, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to match that with a strategy, because nothing you draft is going to hold up a thing that is already holding you up.
His half is signed. Your half is to say something back to Him. Both of those are true right now, and your half is genuinely yours to do, and it is not what makes His half stand.
And your answer is allowed to be plain. It is allowed to be one line with no stages in it. It is allowed to sound like a man in a kitchen with a spoon in his hand saying yes to his own sister.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing. The standing to speak like this belongs to you in Christ and it was given to you, not built by you. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person rather than sit on a page, and what comes of your answer, and when, is His to decide.
- Plan I have been drafting since March, you are not the answer and you never were. Scripture says choose you this day, Joshua 24:15, and I am answering Him today, in one sentence, with the spoon still in my hand.
- Fear that a plain yes is not enough, you do not get a vote in this kitchen. What is written is I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God, Exodus 6:7, and the Holy Spirit asked me for an answer and never once asked me for a program.
- Jesus, You asked me something and today You have my reply. I give it in Your name, out loud, in this room, and the notebook can come down off the refrigerator whenever it likes, because my yes is already spoken.
