Already In Your Name

The towpath on a Saturday morning smells of wet leaves and somebody's woodburner, and it is busier than people think. Two men fishing who have not spoken in an hour and are perfectly happy. A narrowboat going by at walking pace with a dog on the roof like a figurehead. A child on a scooter being told, for the fourth time, to wait at the bridge.

A woman is walking the same three miles she walks every Saturday, with earphones in and a teaching playing that she has already listened to twice.

She believes it. That is the thing to understand about her. Four months ago she came to Christ and she has not stopped since: she reads in the mornings, she asks good questions, she writes things down on the back of receipts. Nothing in her is arguing.

She stops at the bridge to let the scooter past, and the sentence she has been not quite saying for a fortnight finally arrives whole. Even if all of this is true, I do not know what any of it gives me.

That is not doubt. Doubt would be easier to spot. That is a person standing inside a covenant with no idea what is in it, and if you have been standing there too, you already know it is a strangely lonely place to be, because everybody around you seems delighted about something you cannot name.

God promised first, and a promise has one signature on it

Start where the covenant starts, which is not with you.

Paul settles the question of who holds this up in one line of Galatians. The inheritance, he says, did not come by law: God gave it to Abraham by a promise (Galatians 3:18). Read that again slowly, because the difference is the whole thing. A bargain has two signatures on it and can be broken from either side. A promise has one, and it stands on the character of whoever made it, and on nothing else at all.

Then, at the end of the same argument, he turns it toward the people reading: those who belong to Christ are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise (Galatians 3:29).

So the settled half of this covenant is His, and it was settled by His own word, in His own promise, before you knew any of it existed.

You are inside an agreement whose first signature was God's and whose weight does not rest on yours. That is not my reassurance, it is exactly what stands written about how the inheritance was given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a promise made that long ago and makes it feel like it was made about you. Nothing about that half is waiting on your performance today.

Now what is actually in it

Here is the part nobody walked you through, and it is not vague. Paul writes it out in a single breath of thanksgiving.

giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.Colossians 1:12

Qualified. Somebody else did that verb. And then he keeps going, and the next two lines name three things you can put your hand on.

First, a rescue that has already happened: He has delivered us from the domain of darkness. Past tense, done, no longer where you live.

Second, a transfer: and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. You did not apply for that. Somebody carried you across.

You were carried out of one kingdom and set down inside another, and both of those verbs sit in the past tense in Colossians 1:13. Nobody is waiting for you to feel relocated first. The Spirit was given to people who had already been moved, and He works from inside the new address rather than from outside the old one.

Third, and this is the one people never claim: in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Not will have. Have.

You have forgiveness in your possession right now, in the same tense Paul used when he wrote it down. Scripture keeps that verb in the present on purpose, and the Spirit of God is not in the business of announcing what is merely available. He announces what has been handed over.

There is more, and it stays this concrete. Paul tells the Ephesians that when they believed they were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is Himself the guarantee of the inheritance (Ephesians 1:13 and 14). The guarantee is not a document. It is a Person, living in you, and He is God's own assurance that the rest is real. And Romans says the Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs (Romans 8:16 and 17).

You have the guarantee of this inheritance living inside you, and He is not a copy of the document, He is a Person. Ephesians 1:14 uses that exact word, guarantee, of the promised Holy Spirit, and a guarantee who has already moved in is God's own way of saying that the rest of it is not in question.

Notice what Scripture never says is in this covenant. It does not name a house, a salary, a healing on a date, or a life that goes the way you planned it. It names forgiveness, adoption, access, the Spirit, and God Himself as the portion. Those are not the small print left over after the good stuff. In the Bible they are the good stuff, and a person who has them has more than a person who has everything else.

Which half is settled, and which half is yours

Say this part plainly, because a great deal of confusion lives in the gap.

The oath is settled and it is God's. Your response is real and it is yours, and it purchases nothing. Both halves of that sentence are true at once, and dropping either one leaves you either anxious or asleep.

So what is your half? Paul tells Timothy to take hold of the eternal life to which he was called (1 Timothy 6:12), and says of himself that he presses on to make it his own because Christ Jesus has made him His own (Philippians 3:12). Take hold. It is the verb of a hand closing on something already put there, and it is nothing whatever like a payment.

You were given something to take hold of, and taking hold of it is not the same as earning it. That distinction is written all the way through the letters, and His Spirit is the one who keeps a person from turning a gift into a job. Your response matters enormously. It also settles nothing, because the settling was done under oath by somebody else.

And do not let anybody flatten that into nothing being asked of you. Plenty is asked. You are asked to trust Him, to come near, to forgive the way you were forgiven, to walk in the light and to keep saying yes on ordinary Saturdays. Those things are real, they cost something, and God takes them seriously. What they never do is hold the covenant up. A child lays the table in a house whose roof they did not build, and the laying of the table matters enormously and holds up nothing at all.
