Inheritance Made YoursEphesians 1:14

The Part Of It That Is Not Later

This message is for to find the part of the inheritance that is his today, having filed the whole thing under things that happen after he dies

Wes married Dorothy in the fall, and at the reception her father Hollis got him by the elbow and said about four sentences to him, and Wes had been turning them over ever since.

"You are mine now. Shop out back is yours, the good saw and all of it, you do not knock. Truck is yours when you need it. And there is a chair at this table on Sundays and it stays there whether you come or not."

Wes said thank you. He meant it. And then he filed the whole thing under the sort of thing a man says at a wedding.

Nine years.

Nine years of asking before he borrowed the truck, and asking twice, and returning it with more gas in it than he took. Nine years of coming on Sundays only when Dorothy said her mother had called and mentioned it. He never went in the shop. Not once, in nine years, except the two times Hollis walked him out there and put something in his hands.

And there was a chair. Everybody at that table knew whose chair it was. It was the one nearest the door with the arm worn pale, and if a cousin sat in it, somebody moved the cousin.

It came apart on a warm afternoon in June, out back, everybody around the long table under the pecan tree, the food mostly gone and the ice melting in the glasses. One of the boys asked Hollis where the walnut for the crib had come from, and Hollis said, without any weight on it at all, "Ask Wes. He picked it. He has had the run of that shop since the day he married my daughter."

And Wes heard it.

He set his glass down and said, out loud, in front of everybody, "You meant that. At the wedding. You meant it right then."

Hollis looked genuinely confused. "Meant what?"

"All of it. I thought that was a thing you say."

And Hollis started laughing, and Dorothy put her face in her hands, and one of the boys said something about the nine years of gas money, and it went around that table for a solid ten minutes, and Wes laughed until his eyes ran, and every single one of those nine years was on the table and none of it was held against him.

And you have that drawer. Something was said over you at the start, and you heard it, and you filed it under later, and you have spent years asking permission for a thing that was handed to you before you ever went looking.

The Part Of It That Is Not Later

What later took from you

Start with the ground, because everything stands on it and it is not a note at the end.

This covenant has two halves. One half is God's oath, sworn and settled and finished, and no amount of your hanging back at the edge of it changes a syllable. The other half is your response, and it is real, it is genuinely asked, and it is not what holds the covenant up. That is the shape of the whole thing. And a man can believe both of those and still never once walk into the shop.

Because the quiet damage of the word later is not that it takes anything away. It is that it lets you agree with everything while touching none of it. Nobody argues with later. It sounds patient. It sounds like humility. And it will keep a son asking permission at his own family's table for nine years.

You have been handed something already, and Scripture is not vague about when, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a written line into a thing a man can actually walk into rather than admire from the yard.

The guarantee is a Person, and He is here now

Here is the sentence, and read what it says the guarantee actually is:

who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.Ephesians 1:14

Who. Not what. The guarantee is the Holy Spirit Himself, and He is not a receipt held somewhere for later. He was given. In this life, on this side, to men who are still asking permission for the truck.

And a guarantee in the old sense is not a promise that something is coming. It is a piece of the thing itself, handed over at the beginning so that the rest is beyond argument.

You have the guarantee of your inheritance living in you, and Ephesians 1:14 places Him at the start of the arrangement rather than at the end of it, and the Spirit named in that verse is not waiting on a date on a calendar before He begins.

In His own words, at a table, before He left

And here is Christ Himself, saying what He was going to do about it, in the plainest words He used all night:

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.John 14:16 and 17

Read the tenses in that last line and read them slowly. He dwells with you. Present. Not at the end of your life. Not when you have been coming long enough. He said it to men who were about to fail him badly within a few hours, and He did not add a condition to it.

You are not standing in the yard hoping to be invited in one day. You are a man to whom the Spirit of truth was given, and John 14:17 puts that in the present tense on purpose, and Scripture nowhere makes His indwelling the reward for length of service.

What is actually yours today

So let us be careful and specific here, because this is exactly where people start promising things God never said.

The article is not going to tell you what your circumstances will do. That is not what the terms hand over and it is not mine to hand you. But here is what is named, plainly, in the document, as present tense:

The Spirit Himself, given. Access to the Father, right now, without an appointment. The name of Jesus to pray in. Sonship, which is not a title you grow into but a standing you were placed in. And a witness inside you that keeps saying so when nothing outside you is saying anything at all.

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.Romans 8:16 and 17

Children first, then heirs. That is the order, and it is not a queue.

And the response is real. Take hold of it. Come on Sundays. Walk into the shop without knocking, because the not knocking was the actual instruction and asking twice was never humility. Your response does not create the inheritance and it is not what keeps it; it is what a man does inside something already handed to him, and it is genuinely asked of you.

The breakthrough

Nothing here is waiting on you to become someone. That is the whole reason it was handed over at the start rather than at the end.

Right now, as you read, later can give back what it has been holding. You are not a guest in this house. You have the Spirit of truth dwelling with you and in you, and John 14:17 says so in the present tense rather than the future, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a sentence spoken at a table two thousand years ago and makes a man set his glass down and hear it.

So set your glass down. Say the thing out loud, in front of whoever is there. And then go and use something that has been yours the whole time.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at a table if you can, out loud, with somebody in earshot. You are not applying for a hearing: the standing to speak like this belongs to you in Christ and was given to you on the first day rather than awarded for length of service; Scripture is under every line here, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a written inheritance something a man walks into. What He hands you and when is His to decide, and the outcome is His.

  1. Later, you have been holding things that were mine on the day they were given, and you are handing them back. Ephesians 1:14 calls the Spirit the guarantee of my inheritance, and a guarantee is handed over at the start of a thing or it is not a guarantee at all. In the name of Jesus I am taking hold today of what has been mine the whole time.
  2. Fear that I am a guest here, you are answered by the Spirit Himself and never by how long I have been coming. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God, and that witness was handed to me at the beginning rather than on an anniversary. I am walking into the shop without knocking, because the not knocking was the instruction.
  3. Father, You gave me the Spirit of truth as the guarantee and You did not hold Him back until the end of anything. Your word says in John 14:17 that He dwells with me and is in me, and that is present tense in a sentence spoken to men who were about to fail badly that same night. I am taking hold of one thing today that was always mine, and I am saying it out loud at my own table.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
