I Thought I Had Voided It

Wes Cabot got to the base at ten past six with everything he owned from that team washed, dried and stacked in the bed of his truck.

Helmet. Harness. Prusiks in a bag with the ends taped. The boots he had worn on every callout for four years, scrubbed at the kitchen sink until the mud was out of the lugs, which is a thing a man only does when he is not planning to muddy them again.

It was first light. Corwin was already there because Corwin is always already there, one hip against the door frame, coffee in both hands, watching the ridge come up out of the dark the way he does every morning of his life.

Wes carried the kit over and set it on the bench and did not sit down.

"I am off," he said. "I know it. I am not going to make you say it."

"Off what," said Corwin.

"The roster."

There had been a night ten days before, the bad one, wind out of the north and a family of four somewhere above the treeline. The pager went. Wes was standing in his own kitchen with his coat already in his hand, and he stood there, and he did not move, and he did not move, and by the time he could make his legs work the trucks had gone without him.

Nobody had said one word to him about it since. That was somehow worse. He had spent ten days waiting for the letter.

Corwin put his coffee down on the rail and looked at the stacked gear for a moment.

"Standing orders," he said. "Not the new ones. The old ones, from when this base was three men and a station wagon. There is a line in there about a bad night. It says no member comes off this roster for a failure to answer. It says the team carries the callout and the team carries the member."

Wes did not say anything.

"It was written in nineteen fifty-something," Corwin said. "By men who had already had their own bad night and knew that anybody who signs up long enough is going to have one. It is not a favor somebody is doing you this morning, Wes. It is a sentence that was in there before you ever walked up that path."

And then he picked up the helmet and pushed it back into Wes's chest, and Ada came out of the bay with the harness and put it in his hands, and Wes stood in the first sun holding his own gear and laughed the way a man laughs when relief hits him sideways and he has nowhere to put it.

Now here is the part that is yours.

You did something, or failed to do something, and you have been quietly assuming that it ended the whole arrangement. Nobody has said so. That is the worst part. You have been ten days, or ten years, in a truck in the dark, driving up to hand in your kit.

The clause was older than the failure

Let me name the weight before I lift anything, because a man carrying this one is usually carrying it silently.

Assuming an agreement has been voided does something particular to a person. It makes them tidy. They stop asking for anything. They wash the boots and stack the gear and get their affairs in order, and from the outside it can look like humility, and underneath it is a man quietly closing his own account because he cannot bear to have it closed for him.

So we are going to read the clause. Not a kindness somebody offers you this morning. The clause, which was in the document before your night happened.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

Read the joints in that sentence, because the whole thing turns on them. First: I am writing so that you may not sin, which means the ask is real and John is not softening it in his hands. Then: but if anyone does. That is the hinge, and it is in the document. The provision is not a concession squeezed out afterward by somebody sympathetic. It was drafted in, by the same hand, in the same breath, before the ink was dry.

And it names a person rather than a process. Not a procedure, not a probation, not a form to fill in. An advocate, with the Father, and He has a name.

You have an advocate named in the terms of your own covenant, and that is not my reassurance to you, it is written in 1 John 2:1 in the plainest words the letter owns, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a named advocate off the page and stands Him where your dread has been standing.

What He is doing right now, according to the letter

Here is the other one, and it is the strangest sentence in the whole book about what Jesus is occupied with at this moment.

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.Hebrews 7:25

Take the always seriously. Not sometimes. Not when the case is strong. The verse gives a reason for the saving, and the reason is not the quality of the person being saved; the reason is that the One doing the interceding does not stop and does not die and is not somewhere else this morning.

And take to the uttermost seriously too. That phrase is there because somebody knew the question you have been asking in the truck. It is not saving up to a point. It is saving all the way out to the far edge of the thing.

You were never holding this agreement together by your own record, and I am not being generous with you; I am reading Hebrews 7:25, which locates the holding in the One who always lives, and the Spirit is the One who makes a fact like that stand up in a man at six in the morning with his gear in his arms.

Which half is settled and which half is yours

Now the sentence this whole thing stands on, and it goes here in the middle of the teaching, not at the bottom where a disclaimer would sit.

The half that holds this up is Christ's own unbroken interceding, and that half is settled. The half that is yours is your response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it is not the half carrying the weight. Both of those are true at once and neither one cancels the other.

So the response is not canceled by the mercy, and I will not let it be. Drawing near is still yours to do, and the verse says so in the same breath: those who draw near to God through Him. What is asked is asked.

But notice what is not there. There is no probation. There is no waiting period. There is no schedule of amends, and nowhere in the terms is there a running total with your name on it, because a covenant with a balance in it is not a covenant, it is an account, and He did not open one of those with you.

You have no probation to serve and no interval to sit out. Those words are simply not in 1 John 2:1, and a provision drafted before your night is not one that reopens after it, and His Spirit works from the clause as it was written rather than from the sentence your dread has been composing in a truck at six in the morning.

Name the thing once. Once is enough. Itemizing it is not repentance, it is a second failure wearing the clothes of the first, and it keeps a man in the parking lot for years.
