Mercy Written In1 John 2:1

The Green Box on the Wall

This message is for the volunteer at a Saturday hall who watches a first aid box come off the wall for a grazed knee and is quietly certain that nothing on any wall anywhere covers what they did on Wednesday

The boy goes down on the parquet between the tea table and the stacked chairs, and the noise he makes brings every adult in the hall round at once.

It is a knee. It is only ever a knee. But he is four and there is blood on his sock, and while three people are saying the useless soothing things, a woman none of you knows by name has already crossed the floor and lifted the green box off its bracket on the wall by the fire door.

She has it open on a chair before he has finished the first proper wail. Wipes. A dressing in a sealed packet. A pair of little scissors nobody has ever needed. She is calm in the specific way of somebody who has done this in this hall before, and inside two minutes he is sitting on a table with a plaster on and a biscuit, deciding whether to keep crying.

And you stand there in the middle of a perfectly ordinary Saturday holding a mug you have not drunk from, thinking about a box.

Because somebody put that box there. Years ago, before that boy was born, somebody with no idea who would fall or when went to the trouble of screwing a bracket into a wall in a hall and filling a box with everything a fall requires. They did not know his name. They knew there would be one.

And the thought that arrives next, uninvited and cold, is the one you have been carrying since Wednesday. There is no box for what I did. There is a box on the wall for a grazed knee and there is nothing anywhere for the thing I said, or did not say, or did again after promising myself I was done with it. I broke my side of it this week and I would like to know, plainly, what the document says about that.

The Green Box on the Wall

What is settled, and what is your side

Let me put the two halves of this on the table straight away, because a person who cannot tell them apart will spend years paying for something that was bought.

There is a settled side. God bound Himself, in His own words, under His own oath, and here is one of the clauses:

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.Hebrews 8:12

That is not a mood He was in. It is a term. It is the covenant saying, in the voice of the One offering it, what happens about failure. And He said it before anybody signed, before the first breach, before Wednesday.

Then there is your side, and it is real and it matters: you respond. You live inside it, you say yes, you come. That is genuinely asked of you and this site will never pretend otherwise. What it is not is the thing holding the covenant up.

You are standing on a settled side that your week did not move. I am not being generous with something that is not mine to be generous with. The written word records the oath and states the clause, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a legal sentence and makes it ground under a person's feet. Your response is asked. Your response is not the foundation.

Mercy is a clause, not an exception

Here is what the green box on the wall actually tells you about the person who put it there.

They expected a fall. Not a particular fall, not yours specifically, but falls in general, in a hall with children and skittles and a step by the kitchen door. The box is not evidence that they were disappointed in anybody. The box is evidence that they were realistic and that they cared enough to be ready.

John writes to people he loves and he says it in almost exactly that order. I am writing this so that you may not sin. That is the hope, plainly stated. And then, immediately, in the same breath, with no gap and no scolding: but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

The word for advocate there is the one you would use for the person who stands up and speaks on your behalf. Not a character witness. Someone whose whole role in the proceedings is to represent you.

You have an advocate already named in this covenant, and the naming happened before your week did. Scripture puts him in the sentence directly after the word if, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that clause a place a person can actually stand rather than a doctrine they can recite. He was not added afterwards because you needed Him. He was in the document.

The probation nobody imposed

Now let me say the harder thing, which is what has been done with Wednesday since Wednesday.

You have put yourself on probation. Nobody set it, nobody signed it, and there is no page in the covenant it is written on, but you have been serving it anyway: quieter in prayer, careful in worship, hanging back a little, waiting for the atmosphere to feel right again before you approach anything. And underneath it is the assumption that mercy is a fresh condition, something that has to be applied for and granted each time, rather than a term that was there before you arrived.

You are inside the terms right now and not standing at the door of them. The word is what settles that, not my reassurance, and the Holy Spirit is not administering a sentence God never handed down. The provision is not being reconsidered because of what happened.

And this is not the same as saying it did not matter. It mattered. The document does not pretend otherwise, and neither should you. But mattering and disqualifying are two entirely different things, and only one of them is in the text.

The breakthrough

So stop serving the probation. Not by deciding it was all fine. By reading the clause.

The reason this matters is that a person who thinks mercy is granted case by case will always be quietly negotiating, and a person who knows mercy is written in can simply come. One of them is exhausting and one of them is a covenant.

You have already been given everything this situation requires, and it was in the document before it was ever in your week. I am not softening the terms. Scripture states them in the plainest language there is, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a plain statement past the part of you that keeps refusing it. Nothing here is a fresh condition and nothing here is a payment.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing if you can. You are seated with Christ, and a person who is seated does not have to stand up and re-apply to read the terms of their own covenant. Scripture is the ground under every line here, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written clause into something a body believes. Whatever He does about the rest of the week, He does in His own way, and none of it is on your side of the page.

  1. Wednesday I keep going back over, you are provided for in this document and you are not a breach of it. The written terms say that if anyone sins we have an advocate with the Father, and He was named there long before I needed Him, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Probation I quietly put myself on, you have no clause in this covenant. Mercy was written in before I ever failed, and the Holy Spirit is not administering a sentence God never handed down.
  3. Lord, You bound Yourself to be merciful and to remember my sins no more, and You said it under Your own oath rather than under my performance. Scripture names an advocate in these terms and He is named for me. I thank You, and I am saying what the document provides instead of going back over Wednesday one more time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
