The keys come on a ring so heavy it drags the pocket down on one side, and the old trustee puts them in his hand the way you hand somebody a cup of tea. No form. No signature. She has known him three months.
He stands there holding them and asks what the arrangement is. She says he opens it Tuesday and locks it at nine, and if the boiler starts knocking he is to ring her, and there is a trick to the fire door that she will show him now while she thinks of it.
He asks again. What does he owe. Is there a deposit, is there insurance he has to sort out, is there a rota he has been added to, what happens if he cannot make a Tuesday. She says none of that, love, and goes off to find the thing that props the fire door.
So he starts a notebook. Nothing dramatic, a jotter from the drawer, and in it he writes the date and the hours and the jobs. Third of March, opened six, locked nine fifteen, swept the back room, tightened the handle on the ladies. He does not know why he is doing it and he could not tell you who he expects to show it to. He only knows that a thing this good has a price attached somewhere, and when the price finally comes he wants to be able to show what he has already put in.
You have a notebook. Maybe not a paper one. But you have been keeping a running total with God for years, and some part of you is waiting, patiently and without resentment, for the day the account is presented.

A covenant has terms, and the terms are not a bill
Let us be honest about something, because the alternative is that you go on guessing.
A covenant really does have terms. Anybody who tells you that nothing whatsoever is asked of you has not read the book they are recommending, and the reader who keeps finding conditions in Scripture and cannot square them with what they are told is not being difficult. They are reading correctly.
But hold two words apart and the whole thing comes clear. A payment is what you hand over to acquire a thing. A response is what you do because the thing has already been handed to you. Both look like activity from the outside. They are opposite in every way that matters, and the difference is not the work, it is the direction the work is facing.
You are holding a ring of keys and not an invoice, and that was settled before you ever started writing dates in a jotter. I am not softening the terms to make you feel better: what is asked of you is written down and it stays written. But the Spirit who carried those terms down to us set them in your hand open side up, so that everything you do on a Tuesday faces out from the gift instead of back toward a price.
Now hear the actual terms, in God's own words, and notice who does the verbs.
This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.Jeremiah 31:33-34
Count the I wills. That is the settled half, and it is settled by oath and not by your performance. God bound Himself. He did not attach it to your Tuesdays.
You have a God who has already written His law inside you and closed the file on your sin, and neither of those is under review. That is not a warm sentiment, it is a quoted commitment, and the Holy Spirit is the very means by which the law now sits inside a person instead of on a wall. Nothing you do this week improves it and nothing you fail at reopens it.
So what is actually asked
Here is the sentence this article exists for, and it is not a disclaimer at the end. The oath is God's and it is settled. The response is yours and it is real. Two halves, and the reader who cannot tell them apart will spend a life paying for a thing already bought.
What is asked comes in Paul's usual shape, and the shape is the teaching.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Romans 12:1
Therefore. By the mercies. He has spent eleven chapters on what God has done and only now does he ask for anything, and when he asks he does not ask for a payment, he asks for a person. Present your body. Not your record, not your total, not a proportion of your week. You, turning up.
That is the ask. It is real, it is not nothing, and it is not a bill.
You have been asked for yourself and not for your ledger, and the asking came after the mercies rather than before them. Scripture puts the therefore in front of the appeal on purpose, and it is His Spirit who makes an offered life a living thing rather than a dutiful one. There is no invoice behind this. There never was one.
Never a checklist, and never nothing
Two ditches, one on each side of the road, and this subject falls into one or the other almost every time.
The first ditch is the list. Somebody itemizes what is asked, and within a month it is a scorecard, and a reader who reads it is measuring themselves against it before they have finished the page. The moment terms become an inventory that grades a person, the fine print everybody feared has been printed after all, and by the church.
The second ditch is emptier and just as bad. Nothing is asked, everything is fine, live how you like. That leaves a reader with a covenant that makes no difference to a Tuesday, and it is not what any covenant in Scripture has ever looked like.
The road between them is the caretaker's road. Open it Tuesday. Lock it at nine. Ring me about the boiler. Those are real terms, and a man who never opens the hall has not lost his standing with the trustee, but he has stopped being the caretaker in any meaningful sense, and everybody involved knows it. What he does matters enormously. It is simply not what is holding the arrangement up.
You are inside this covenant on God's oath, and what you do inside it is genuinely yours to do and genuinely matters. Both of those are written, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes obedience feel like living in a house instead of paying for one. You are not maintaining your position. You are living in it.
So the question tonight is not whether God asks anything of you. He does, and pretending otherwise would leave you with a covenant that is not in the Bible.
The question is what has been done with the asking. Whether every request from God has been arriving in your hands as an item on a bill quietly being serviced, when it was only ever an answer He was waiting for.
Jesus said a word spoken to a mountain the size of a grain of mustard is enough, and He put the weight on the speaking rather than on the size of the speaker. The mountain here is a jotter in a drawer with the dates and the hours in it, kept for a creditor who does not exist.
You are free to answer God today without buying anything from Him, because the price was paid by Christ and the receipt is not in your handwriting. Scripture says you were bought at a price and the price was not yours to find, and His Spirit is the one who turns a debtor into a son in the same house. Answer Him. Nothing is owed.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, before you make any plan at all. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing you speak from was given to you and it is not being reviewed while you speak. Jesus said that whoever says to the mountain, be lifted and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, shall have what he says, and He weighed the seed rather than the speaker. The mountain here is a private ledger nobody ever asked you to keep. Scripture has already recorded God's own oath and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an oath from a page into ground under your feet. What He asks of you next, and when, is His to decide, and none of it is a charge against you.
- Notebook of hours in the drawer, you are not an account and you never were one. Scripture says I present myself because of the mercies of God and never in exchange for them, and I am closing you in the name of Jesus.
- Fine print I keep waiting for, you do not get another year of my Tuesdays. His word records that He writes His law inside me and remembers my sin no more, and I am answering Him tonight with one sentence instead of a plan.
- Lord, You are the One who bound Yourself first, and You have never once produced a bill. I thank You, because Your Spirit makes obedience feel like living in a house rather than paying for one, and I am opening the hall on Tuesday because it is mine to open.
