Read It To Me Out Loud

The grove was four rows of old olive trees on a slope above the road, and Kareem had worked it since he was seventeen.

His uncle set it up on a hot afternoon with a handshake and half a sentence. You work it, and there is a share in it for you. That was the whole conversation. Eleven summers later Kareem still could not have told anybody what the share was, and he had never asked, because asking felt like doubting the man who fed him.

So he was careful instead. He came earlier than he had to. He mended the north wall twice in one year and mentioned it to nobody. In a thin year he kept quiet about money, and in a heavy year he kept quiet too, in case a good harvest was the season he found out he had been taking more than he was worth. He carried that arrangement the way a man carries a water jug on a long road. Not heavy exactly. Just never once set down.

It came out at a midday meal. The courtyard table under the vine, the shutters half closed against the white heat, bread torn and going around, a dish of honey in the middle with the spoon standing up in it. Somebody's small boy asked, with his mouth full, how much of the grove belonged to Kareem.

The table went quiet the way tables do.

And his uncle, who was seventy-one and slower than he used to be, wiped his hands, went into the house, and came back with a page folded so long it had gone soft as cloth at the creases. He sat down. He put on the glasses he keeps in his shirt pocket. And he read it out loud at that table with everybody leaning in over the bread.

Our side, he read. Water from the cistern all year, and in a dry year first. The press, at no charge, always. A third of every harvest to Kareem, counted before anything else is counted. And the grove stays his to work whether the year is good or poor, and a poor year is never held against him.

Your side, he read. Work it. Keep the north wall. Come to the table at first harvest.

Then he folded the page again, looked over the top of his glasses, and said: that is the whole of it, and I have never had it read to me either, because my father never read it to me, and I have been meaning to do this for eleven years.

Kareem sat there with honey on his fingers and did not know where to put his face.

And you know that table. Maybe not the grove and maybe not the uncle. But you know what it is to serve faithfully for years inside something nobody ever opened and read to you, being careful, never asking, quietly waiting to find out what you owe.

Nobody was hiding it. Nobody had opened it.

Start with the eleven years, because that is the part almost nobody says out loud.

There is a particular tiredness that comes from serving well inside an agreement nobody has read to you. From the outside it never looks like doubt. It looks like diligence. Underneath it a low arithmetic runs all day, and the arithmetic costs more than the work does.

Here is the sentence this whole message stands on, and it goes at the front rather than at the end. This covenant has two halves and they are not the same kind of thing. One half is God's oath, and that half is settled, finished, and held up entirely by His own faithfulness. The other half is your response, which is real, which is genuinely asked, and which is not what is holding the agreement together. Both of those are true at once, and the person who cannot tell them apart will spend eleven years being careful.

So let somebody read it to you.

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.Deuteronomy 7:9

Read what that line does in one breath. It says there is a covenant, and it says who keeps it. Not who maintains it, not who is audited on it. Keeps it. The verb sits on God, and a thousand generations hang off the other side of it like a weight He carries without strain.

You are standing inside an agreement that somebody else keeps, and this is not my kind opinion of God: Deuteronomy 7:9 puts the keeping on Him in plain language, and His Spirit is at work in you right now turning that written line into ground rather than information.

That is the first column named. Now hear Him say it in His own voice, because a general sense that God means well is exactly what you already had and exactly what never held you up.

And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.Genesis 17:7

I will establish. Not you will maintain. And notice what He binds Himself to be. Not a benefactor, not an inspector. God to you. That is the clause, spoken in the first person by the One who has to keep it.

You have that sentence standing over you as a written commitment and not as a warm feeling, and the Spirit who moved men to set it down in Genesis 17:7 did not lose interest in it once the ink was dry.

Your side is short, and your side is real

Now the other column, and this is where people get nervous, so plainly rather than gently.

Something is asked of you. Deuteronomy 7:9 says so in the same breath as the faithfulness: those who love him and keep his commandments. Anyone who says nothing at all is asked has handed over half a page and called it kindness, and half a page is the thing that cost Kareem eleven summers.

But look at what kind of thing the asking is. Work it. Keep the wall. Come to the table. It is short. It is the shape of a life lived in the grove, not the price of being allowed near the grove. Nothing in that column buys the trees, renews the water, or keeps the press open, because the man who owns the grove settled all of that before anyone handed you a tool.

And this is exactly where a covenant quietly turns into a ledger while nobody is watching. So hear it while the page is still open. You are being addressed, not audited. Scripture never once presents the terms of God as a running total kept in your name, and the Spirit of God who lives in you does not keep score, He keeps company.

I am not going to number your column for you. The moment a covenant becomes a list a person can fail, it has stopped being a covenant and become an inspection, and inspections were never in short supply.
