Still Flinching At The Mailbox

This message is for to stop bracing every morning for a demand on something that was settled years ago, the way he still braces at the mailbox for a debt he cleared long since

Merle Tibbets walks down to the mailbox every morning at ten past nine, and every morning his stomach goes tight when there is a white business envelope in it.

The dog beats him there. The dog has beaten him there for nine years and shows no sign of getting tired of the joke. Cy Prentiss across the road times him some mornings from the porch, hollers out a number, and the two of them laugh about it in the middle of the road like a couple of boys.

Here is what the tight stomach is about.

Merle's grandfather bought the north eighty on a deed with a bad description in it, the kind of sloppy paragraph a country lawyer wrote in an afternoon and nobody read again for two generations. When the old neighbor died, his heirs filed on that ground. Three years of white envelopes followed. Merle got so he could tell the county's envelopes by the weight of them before he had them out of the box.

Then a judge in a courthouse eleven miles away read the file, listened to two afternoons of argument, and signed. The north eighty was Merle's, whole and clear, no lien, no clause, nothing pending. His attorney shook his hand on the courthouse steps and told him to go home and quit worrying.

That was eleven years ago.

And every morning at ten past nine, Merle Tibbets walks down that lane with a stomach that never got the news.

He knows. Ask him and he will tell you straight: it is finished, it is signed, there is nothing coming. He is not confused about the facts. His body simply kept a habit his file gave up eleven years back, and habits do not read court documents.

You know that walk.

Maybe it is not a mailbox. Maybe it is the phone screen when a certain name comes up, or the first three seconds after somebody says we need to talk, or the way you brace on Sunday morning before the sermon starts, waiting for the part where it turns out you owe something.

Something about you was settled a long time ago and your body did not get the memo. So every morning you do a little work to stay in good standing with God, and you would not call it that, and if somebody named it out loud you would flinch the way a man flinches at a white envelope.

Walk down the lane with me. There is nothing in the box.

Still Flinching At The Mailbox

What it actually cost, and what it never cost

The first thing to get straight is what was handed over, because almost everybody has the wrong picture, and the wrong picture is what keeps a person walking down the lane braced.

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.1 Peter 1:18-19

Read the first half of that as carefully as the second. He says plainly what it was not. It was not anything that can be counted, weighed, spent down, or asked for again. It was never that kind of thing at all, which means nobody can hand you a demand in a medium that was never the medium.

So take that as a settled clause under your own feet. You are not standing on a good stretch of behavior; 1 Peter 1:18 says the thing was handed over in blood and not in anything a person could carry, and the Holy Spirit is the One turning that written line from a doctrine you agree with into ground you are actually standing on this morning.

Merle's stomach was not wrong about danger in general. It was wrong about this particular file. And a body that keeps bracing on a closed file is not sinning. It is just uninformed, and information delivered once at a courthouse eleven years ago does not always reach the man at the mailbox.

The handwriting that was against you

There is a sentence in Colossians that reads like a clerk's note, and it is one of the most violent things in the book.

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.Colossians 2:14

Look at the verbs. Blotted out. Took out of the way. Nailed. Not filed, not suspended, not held pending review, not archived in case of a future hearing. The document that had writing on it against you was taken out of the way, which is a strange and physical phrase, and it means the page is not in the room.

Which is why the bracing has no right to stay in a house where that verse has been read out loud. It never came from Scripture, and the Spirit has never once put it in you. It came from a habit, and a habit carries no authority over a signed verdict.

Which half is settled, and which half is yours

Now say it plainly, because the relief has an edge on it and people cut themselves on that edge every day.

His half is settled. Blotted out, taken out of the way, nailed to a cross, in His own words, and nothing you do this week improves it or endangers it. That half is closed.

Your half is not a payment plan and it is not nothing. It is a response, and it is asked of you, plainly, in the same book that closed the file.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.Titus 2:11-12

Notice the order there and do not scramble it. Grace appeared, and then grace teaches. The living comes after the appearing and out of it, never in front of it and never to keep it coming.

So take this without flinching, because it is not a bill: you have a real thing asked of you and it is not the thing holding you up. Titus 2:12 says grace itself is the teacher, and the Holy Spirit is doing that teaching inside you now, which is why obedience in a settled man looks like a son doing chores rather than a debtor working off a page.

What you do matters enormously. It has simply never been the thing that made the ground yours.

The breakthrough

This is the turn, and there is nothing to do in it. It is a reading of a file that has been closed the whole time.

So hear your standing, and hear it as a verdict rather than as encouragement. You are a person with a closed case, and the closing did not depend on the quality of your last eleven years. Colossians 2:14 says the writing that was against you was taken out of the way, and the same Spirit who moved a man to write that sentence is pressing it against the tight place under your ribs right now.

Your stomach may take a while. That is all right. Merle still walks down that lane with his shoulders up some mornings, and the north eighty is still his on every morning of it, because a verdict does not consult a body before it stands.

And you have not been slack. That is the part people miss about a man like this. He was never lazy about his half. He was misinformed about the other half, and being misinformed is a thing that gets fixed by a reading, which is what the Holy Spirit has been doing to you for the last four minutes with a written page.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking your way into standing here. The standing belongs to you in Christ, settled in blood rather than earned in installments, and 1 Peter 1:18 is the paper it rests on with the Holy Spirit witnessing it in your own chest. Say these out loud, and leave the outcome with Him: what He does about the rest of your life is His to decide, and what He closed about your case is already closed.

  1. White envelope, you carry no case against me; go on and be plain mail. Eleven years of bracing down that lane never once reopened a thing that was closed with a signature. The Word of God says the handwriting that was against me was taken out of the way and nailed to the cross, so I walk down to the box this morning like a man who is not waiting, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Probation, get off my mornings; nobody signed you and nobody is enforcing you. I have lived like a man whose case could be reopened at any hour, and Christ closed mine with His own blood, which is not a thing anybody can demand from me twice. The Spirit says clean, and I am walking out under that word today.
  3. Jesus, You took the handwriting that was against me and nailed it to Your cross, and You did not keep a copy in a drawer for later. I have been doing chores to stay in Your good books, and You settled my place before I could lift a finger, so today I do them as a son. Your verdict is the ground under this lane, and I am walking it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
